Spain's major union confederations, CCOO and UGT, have announced a general strike due to the housing crisis. The one-day work stoppage is set to occur before the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 29th. The unions will announce a specific date later.
On the platform X, CCOO is demanding "decent wages" and affordable housing.
UGT states that wages are insufficient to cover housing costs and inflation. The unions intend to link protests for affordable housing with demands for higher incomes.
The Maricarmen Case
This announcement follows a surge in protests against the housing shortage. Tens of thousands nationwide have demonstrated against high rents, a lack of housing, and inadequate protection against evictions since the forced eviction of an 87-year-old woman, María del Carmen Abascal, from her Madrid apartment nearly two weeks ago.
The issue has also become a political focal point. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for early elections after his government failed to pass measures for stronger tenant protection in parliament. The Spanish Tenants' Union had previously called for a general strike.
